Helpful Tips for Making Beef Stew in the Crockpot

Pick the right kind of meat: When you head to the store, look for beef stew meat. This is usually cut into small cubes and marked accordingly. If you cannot find it (or the meat seems to be cut inconsistently, look for chuck roast and cut it yourself.

Don’t skip the sear: The sear helps to keep the meat tender and seals in the juices during the slow cook.

Beef Stew Storage Tips: Store cooked beef stew in the fridge for up to four days and reheat as needed. To freezer, add cooled stew to a freezer-safe container and freeze for up to 3 months.

Stovetop Beef Stew with a Dutch Oven: This recipe can be made on the stovetop with a dutch oven. Follow the process through adding the bay leaf and then allow the stew to simmer on low for six hours.

How to thicken beef stew: Add 1 tablespoon of arrowroot to 1 tablespoon of water and add once stew is done cooking. Stew will thicken over time.

Can you use the instant pot for this?
What timing would you use ?

You can! I would sear the meat on all sides using the saute mode and some oil then cook on manual high pressure for 30 minutes.

Is there a substitute for arrowroot? I don’t have that on hand.

Are you sure about the nutrition facts? I followed the recipe exactly, and split the liquid, meat, and veggies evenly into 6 portions and I have never been so full after supposedly eating only 344 calories(could barely finish it). That usually only happens to me with 750+ calorie meals. Trying to track everything right now, so this would be very helpful!

Great recipe and tastes amazing though!

      • mommafitpgh@gmail.com

yep it's correct! I double checked it just to be sure 🙂 I use a nutrition calculator from a food blogging expert (Nutrifox) to calculate the nutrition info. Hope that helps!

yes! I have some in my freezer right now :). Def brown it before, it will taste better and hold in the moisture.
