Believing himself to be useless at soccer, Aizawa Kakeru instead becomes the manager of his school’s soccer team, while his brother Suguru is its ace, and is even good enough to represent Japan in the championships. However, Kakeru may have a yet unknown strong talent within himself that only his brother Suguru can see, and they often get into arguments over Kakeru’s denial of his skills. Things are made more complicated with the return of Nana, an old friend of theirs that Kakeru has a crush on.

»The Knight in the Area« dreht sich um Kakeru Aizawa, den jüngeren Bruder von Fußballkapitän der Kamakura Oberschule, Suguru. Da Kakeru der Meinung ist, er sei aufgrund mangelnden Könnens als Fußballspieler unbrauchbar, entscheidet er sich, Manager des Schulteams zu werden, in dem sein Bruder Suguru der Starspieler ist. Sugurus Fähigkeiten sind so überragend, dass er sogar für Japans U15 spielen darf. Aber auch Kakeru ist eigentlich sehr talentiert, was er selbst aber nicht wahrhaben will – nur sein Bruder erkennt sein Potenzial. Darum kommt es zwischen den beiden öfter zum Streit. Dann taucht auch noch Nana, eine frühere Mitspielerin aus der Grundschulzeit, bei ihnen auf. Alle drei hatten zusammen einen Kindheitstraum, den sie verwirklichen wollten. Doch ein tragischer Unfall soll das Leben der Freunde schlagartig auf den Kopf stellen …

Suguru, de 15 años, es un crack del fútbol que triunfa como capitán del equipo de su instituto: “El rey del campo”. Su hermano menor, Kakeru, se relega voluntariamente a un segundo plano pese a su talento innato para apoyar a su hermano en la persecución de su sueño de llegar a la liga profesional y jugar la Copa del Mundo.
Pero el sueño queda truncado cuando ambos sufren un accidente de tráfico en el que Suguru fallece... Kakeru, que le sobrevive, se convierte entonces en “caballero” al servicio de un sueño que ahora es de ambos.
Gracias a los consejos de su difunto hermano y al apoyo de los miembros de su equipo, Kakeru logra creer en sí mismo para sacar a relucir su talento y convertirse, así, ¡en un auténtico as del campo!
