49ers vs. Eagles score, results: Philadelphia takes NFC East lead with first win of season | Sporting News (2024)

Sunday night's NFL game between the Eagles and 49ers was a low-scoring affair through three quarters, but the Eagles were able to snatch a 25-20 win thanks to a late fourth-quarter surge that saw them score touchdowns on back-to-back plays.

First, Carson Wentz delivereda 42-yard touchdownbomb to, of all people, Travis Fulgham, who was signed off the practice squad this week because of the team's lack of depth at wide receiver with Alshon Jeffery, DeSean Jackson and Jalen Reagor all out. His touchdown gave Philadelphia an 18-14 lead with 5:42 remaining.

On the ensuing 49ers drive, quarterback Nick Mullens, starting in place of the injured Jimmy Garoppolo, threw an interception to Alex Singleton, who returned it fora touchdown. Suddenly, the Eagles were up 25-14.

IYER: Cowboys will overcome bad defense with Dak and playing in East

Enter third-string QB C.J. Beathard, whom the 49ers drafted in the third round in 2017. Beathard got right into rhythm, completing nine of his first 10 passes to lead a touchdown drive just before the two-minute warning. That allowed San Franciscoto use the stoppage and their two remaining timeoutsto get the ball back with 1:40 remaining at their own 12. Beathard continued to look poised, getting the 49ers to the Eagles' 33. But alas, his Hail Mary towardDeebo Samuel was batted away in the end zone.

With the win, the Eagles (1-2-1) captured the leadin the putrid NFC East. And Wentz might finally be able to get a few of the town's critics off his back after a decent outing given the lack of weapons around him; he finished with 18-of-28 passing for 193 yards, a touchdown and an interception off a pass tipped at the line, and he added 37 yardsand a touchdown on the ground.
